Twenty-seven minutes later, Lady Darriby-Jones was secured in the tightest skirt ever, having spent the lion’s share of that time listening to Millie’s monologue concerning her close scrape with Mr Manners.

“Thank you, Millie, both for dressing me and for telling me what happened. Please forget all about Mr Manners’ rudeness now. I will take it up with him in my own way. Now, do you really think I’ll be able to walk around the house in this skirt?”

“Oh yes, milady, they are all the rage right now.”

Manners was waiting for her. He’d sensibly moved back to the shade of some big pine trees and had been pacing back and forth, hopefully calming his temper.

“What did you want to ask, milady?” Manners asked as soon as she fell into step next to him.

“I know about the last meeting with Sergeant Fisher.”

“So does everyone.”

“No, I mean that I know what you talked about. I’ve seen his notes in preparation.”

“Ah, he was the only good one from a bunch of baduns.”

“Which is why I know you didn’t kill him,” Lady Darriby-Jones said as they walked around the various rhododendron bushes just beyond the lawn.

“Because I admired him?”

“Exactly, Mr Manners, exactly.” They did five minutes in total silence, until Manners said something quite out of character.

“Help me find who did it,” he said, “so as to get me reinstated to my proper rank. I need your help, Lady Darriby. I can’t do it on my own.”

This was the man she detested. He deflected blame and grabbed glory, not caring whose lives were destroyed in the process. Yet her heart went out to this awful man, so humbled, so suddenly.

“I’ll do whatever I can,” she said. “Believe you me.”
